Occupy the Justice Department Protest Rally

The Occupy Movement and Occupy the Hood held a protest rally called Occupy the Justice Department on Tuesday, April 24th, in Washington, DC, which featured a broad coalition of community organizers, activists, artists, students, scholars and celebrities. Part rally, part protest, part music & poetry concert, the event centered on the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Justice (The DOJ), and then a protest march proceeded to various areas of Washington, DC. Speakers and performers included: Public Enemy’s Chuck D, rapper M-1 from the duo Dead Prez, a French group that included the Deputy Mayor of Paris, France, rapper Jasiri X, activists Frances Fox Piven & Pam Africa, along with other musicians, spoken word artists, and activists. Live messages showered the crowd from actor Danny Glover, Mumia Abu-Jamal, as well as others. The purpose of the protest was to call for the release of Mumia Abu-Jamal, on this, his 58th birthday. However the event also brought light to other cultural and political issues, such as mass incarceration, health care and joblessness.

Once the march reached the White House area, 28 protesters who refused to move on from the front gates, were arrested during what was a planned act of civil disobedience.
